Our September 2014 cover bike is owned by Dick Carlson from Kansas City, Missouri. We had the opportunity to gather more information about Dick and his 2014 Indian Chief Classic, and we were also able to gather information from this month’s cover model Alicia.

CC: Dick, what is your occupation?
Dick: I’m a bender of light.

CC: Do you have any hobbies other than riding?
Dick: Yes, I also enjoy reading, vintage sports cars, shooting, and racing, other than NASCAR.

CC: Why do you ride?
Dick: The freedom.

CC: How long have you been riding?
Dick: I’ve been riding about 45 years.

CC: What was your first bike?
Dick: My first bike was a Honda CB350.

CC: How many bikes have you owned?
Dick: Eight.

CC: How many bikes do you currently own?
Dick: Just my Indian.

CC: What do you like most about your Indian?
Dick: The comfort.

CC: What is the significance of the "99" you placed on your side covers, and the sticker on your back fender?
Dick:“The number 99 was the race number of Floyd Emde who won the Daytona 200 on an Indian back in 1948, and the sticker on the back represents our vintage race group.”

CC: What is your dream bike?
Dick: Anything but a Harley.

CC: What is your most memorable riding experience?
Dick: Having a B-52 fly overhead at very low altitude in western Kansas, which I suspect was from a training mission out of Sedalia.

CC: What is your least memorable riding experience?
Dick: Any winter’s day when I couldn’t ride.

CC: To what motorcycle clubs or organizations do you belong?
Dick: AMA and Doof Clenas.

CC: Which motorcycle rallies and events have you attended, and which is your favorite?
Dick: I’ve been to Daytona Bike Week, Bikes, Blues & BBQ. I like Bikes, Blues & BBQ because it’s closer.

CC: What is your favorite bike night location?
Dick: Kobi’s, because of the history.

CC: Do you prefer riding in a group or by yourself?
Dick: I prefer riding in a small group or by myself, but I like riding alone because I don’t like committees.

CC: Who are some of your closest riding buddies?
Dick: Randy Jones and Jane O’Hara.

CC: Thanks for the interview Dick, and thank you for letting us shoot your bike for this month’s cover.
